Matthew 11:28-30
"A Special Invitation"

Introduction:
     Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
     Matthew 11:27, “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

I. We are invited to rest. v. 28
     “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.”

II. We are invited to serve. vs. 29-30
     “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

     "Not My will, but Thine be done" (Matthew 26:39).
     "If anyone wishes to serve Me, let Him deny himself, take up His cross, and follow Me" (Matthew 16:24).
     "I delight to do Thy will, O my God" (Psalm 40:8).
     "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven" (Luke 11:2).
     "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind; that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2).
     "We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20).

III. We are invited to learn. v. 29
     “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me …”

     "Here am I, send me" (Isaiah 6:8).
     "What shall I do, Lord" (Acts 22:10).
     Ephesians 4:17-24, “So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; 19 and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. 20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.”

Conclusion:
     "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
     "Thy testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live" (Psalm 119:144).

I.  Mountain #1: I Can See It … I Just Can't Touch It  vs. 18-21
    “For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, [19] and to the blast of a trumpet and the sound of words which sound was such that those who heard begged that no further word be spoken to them. [20] For they could not bear the command, “IF EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED.” [21] And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, “I AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling.””

Exodus 20:18-19


II. Mountain #2: I Can't See It … But I Can Touch It  vs. 22-24
    “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, [23] to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, [24] and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.”

Conclusion: Hebrews 12:25-27, “See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. [26] And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN.” [27] This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.”

Hebrews 12:28-29, “Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; [29] for our God is a consuming fire.”
