I. The Hope of the Righteous Psalm 120

“A song of ascents. I call on the LORD in my distress, and He answers me. 2 Save me, O LORD, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues. 3 What will He do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue? 4 He will punish you with a warrior's sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree. 5 Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar! 6 Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. 7 I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war.”

2 Timothy 3:12-14, “everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it.”

Psalm 39:4-7, “Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. 5 You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man's life is but a breath. 6 Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro: He bustles about, but only in vain; he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it. 7 But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.”

II. The Help of the Righteous Psalm 121

“A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber; 4 indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—He will watch over your life; 8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

Psalm 20:1-2, “May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. 2 May He send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.”

Hebrews 12:22-23, “the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. … 23 to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven.”

“The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; He is their stronghold in time of trouble. 40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in Him” (Psalm 37:39-40). “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

III. The Home of the Righteous Psalm 122

“A song of ascents. Of David. I rejoiced with those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD." 2 Our feet are standing in your gates, O Jerusalem. 3 Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. 4 That is where the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, to praise the name of the LORD according to the statute given to Israel. 5 There the thrones for judgment stand, the thrones of the house of David. 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May those who love you be secure. 7 May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels." 8 For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, "Peace be within you." 9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.”

Romans 14:19, “make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” 

 

Conclusion:

Psalm 122:8-9, “8 For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, "Peace be within you." 9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.”

1 Peter 1:3-5, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Introduction:

Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. 3 He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

I. The Lord cares for His people as a shepherd cares for his sheep. vs. 1-4

Psalm 95:7, "For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand."

Psalm 19:7, "The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul." 

John 10: 27-30, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand." 

II. The Lord cares for His people as a host cares for his guests. vs. 5-6

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

Matthew 6:25-33, "For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor for your body, as to what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life's span? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? I. Past Demonstration vs. 1-5

II. Present Relation vs. 6-14

III. Future Aspiration v. 15

“As for me, I shall behold Thy face in righteousness; I will be satisfied with Thy likeness when I awake.”

Psalm 84:8-12, “O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; Give ear, O God of Jacob! 9 … O God, … look upon the face of Thine anointed. 10 For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God, Than dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD gives grace and glory; No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. 12 O LORD of hosts, How blessed is the man who trusts in Thee!”

Proverbs 24:19-20, “Do not fret because of evildoers, Or be envious of the wicked; 20 For there will be no future for the evil man; The lamp of the wicked will be put out.”

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3).

“Give us each day our daily bread” (Luke 11:3). “Do not be anxious then, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'With what shall we clothe ourselves?' 32 For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:31-33).

Introduction:

Acts 4:24-28, “And when they heard this, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, "O Lord, it is Thou who DIDST MAKE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM, 25 who by the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Thy servant, didst say, 'WHY DID THE HEATHENS RAGE, AND THE PEOPLES DEVISE FUTILE THINGS? 26 'THE KINGS OF THE EARTH TOOK THEIR STAND, AND THE RULERS WERE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST THE LORD, AND AGAINST HIS CHRIST.' 27 "For truly in this city there were gathered together against Thy holy servant Jesus, whom Thou didst anoint, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Thy hand and Thy purpose predestined to occur.”

1 Kings 18:17-18, "And it came about, when Ahab saw Elijah that Ahab said to him, 'Is this you, you troubler of Israel?' And he said, 'I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and you have followed the Baals.'" 

 

Luke 16:31, "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead." Luke 16:14-15, "Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things, and they were scoffing at Him. And He said to them, 'You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.'"

Mark 7:6-8: "And He said to them, 'Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far away from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.' Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.'"

Romans 1:16, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." v. 17, "in it the righteousness of God is revealed ...." v. 18, "the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness."

Romans 1:32, "although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice [ungodliness and unrighteousness] are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them." 

 

Matthew 23:37, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling."

I. David speaks of rebellion. vs. 1-3
     “Why are the nations in an uproar, And the peoples devising a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand, And the rulers take counsel together Against the LORD and against His Anointed: 3 "Let us tear their fetters apart, And cast away their cords from us!"

II. God speaks in response. vs. 4-6
     “He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury: 6 "But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain."

John 13:20, "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."

III. Christ speaks with reassurance. vs. 7-9
     “"I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'Thou art My Son, Today I have begotten Thee. 8 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Thine inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Thy possession. 9 'Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron, Thou shalt shatter them like earthenware.'"

IV. David speaks of repentance. vs. 10-12
     “Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. 11 Worship the LORD with reverence, And rejoice with trembling. 12 Do homage to the Son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!”

Conclusion:

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, "The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: Fear God, and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil." 

 

"But the wicked are like the tossing sea, for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up refuse and mud,"  Isaiah 57:20-21, "'There is no peace,' says my God, 'for the wicked.'"

Revelation 3:15-16, "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I would that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth."

     2 Chronicles 20:20, “Have faith in the LORD your God and you will be upheld; have faith in His prophets and you will be successful.”


I. We must trust in God’s plan. vs. 8-15


     A. We must trust in His Sovereignty, vs. 8-11.
     “Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. 9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. 10 The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart from generation to generation.”


Isaiah 46:9-10; Psalm 103:19; 9:7-10; Proverbs 19:21; Deuteronomy 7:21


     “Trust in the LORD forever, For in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock” (Isaiah 26:4).


     B. We must trust in God’s Selection of a people, vs. 12-15.
     “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. 13 The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men; 14 From His dwelling place He looks out On all the inhabitants of the earth, 15 He who fashions the hearts of them all, He who understands all their works.”


     Psalm 65:4-5, “Blessed are those You choose and bring near to live in Your courts! We are filled with the good things of Your house, of Your holy temple. 5 You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas.”

     Psalm 4:3-5, “But know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for Himself; The LORD hears when [we] call to Him. 4 Tremble, and do not sin; Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, And trust in the LORD.”


II. We must trust in God’s protection. vs. 16-22


     A. We must trust in His Strength, vs. 16-19.
     “The king is not saved by a mighty army; A warrior is not delivered by great strength. 17 A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it deliver anyone by its great strength. 18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope for His lovingkindness, 19 To deliver their soul from death And to keep them alive in famine.”


Psalm 118:8; 1 Chronicles 5:18-20; 2 Chronicles 14:8-12


     Jeremiah 17:5-8, “This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He will be like a bush in the wastelands; he will not see prosperity when it comes. He will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. 7 But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. 8 He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."”


     Isaiah 12:2, “Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid.”


     B. We must trust in His Security, vs. 20-22.
     “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. 21 For our heart rejoices in Him, Because we trust in His holy name. 22 Let Your lovingkindness, O Lord, be upon us, According as we have hoped in You.”


     Psalm 25:1-3, “To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul; 2 in You I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. 3 No one whose hope is in You will ever be put to shame, …” “in You I trust, O my God.”

     2 Samuel 5:17-25, “When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard of it, he went down to the stronghold. [18] Now the Philistines came and spread themselves out in the valley of Rephaim. [19] Then David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?” And the LORD said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.” [20] So David came to Baal-perazim and defeated them there; and he said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.” Therefore he named that place Baal-perazim. [21] They abandoned their idols there, so David and his men carried them away.
     [22] Now the Philistines came up once again and spread themselves out in the valley of Rephaim. [23] When David inquired of the LORD, He said, “You shall not go directly up; circle around behind them and come at them in front of the balsam trees. II. God speaks in response. vs. 4-6
     “He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger and terrify them in His fury: 6 "But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain."
