Romans 1:18-32
"The Rejection of Faith"
I. Man's Rejection and God's Response vs. 18-20
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness
and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For
since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal
power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood
through what has been made, so that they are without excuse."
John 3:36, "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
1 Peter 4:17-19, "For
it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it
begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey
the gospel of God? 18 And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner? 19 Therefore,
those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their
souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right."
John 15:22, "If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin."
II. The Priority of Honor vs. 21-25
"For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give
thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish
heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and
exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form
of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling
creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For
they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the
creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen."
Romans 13:7, "Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor."
Matthew 23:5-7, "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments. 6 They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues, 7 and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men."
Hebrews 3:3-4, "For
He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as
the builder of the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God."
III. God's Rejection and Man's Response vs. 26-32
"For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their
women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and
in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the
woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men
committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due
penalty of their error. 28 And
just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave
them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being
filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy,
murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and
although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such
things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give
hearty approval to those who practice them."
Romans 9:21-24, "Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? 22 What
if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power
known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for
destruction? 23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles."
Conclusion: 2 Peter 3:15, "regard the patience of our Lord as salvation;" Hebrews 5:8-9, "Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. 9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation."
