Sunday Sermon Outline: Citizens of Heaven

“Citizens of Heaven”
Philippians 3:20-21

Introduction:

“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our lowly condition into conformity with His glorious body, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself” (Philippians 3:20-21).

1 Timothy 3:15; Hebrews 11:13; John 15:19; 17:14,16; Galatians 1:4

I. Solid Citizens

Hebrews 12:23

We have been “raised up with [Jesus], and seated with Him in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 2:6).

“Not that [we] have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but [we] press on in order that [we] may lay hold of that for which also [we were] laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, [we] do not regard [ourselves] as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing [we] do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 [we] press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12-14).

Philippians 3:18-19, “many walk … [as] … enemies of the cross of Christ, 19 [their] end is destruction, [their] god is their appetite, … [their] glory is in their shame, [and they] set their minds on earthly things.”

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But … in heaven, … 21 for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:19-21).

II. Sound Thinking

Hebrews 2:5; Galatians 1:4; Matthew 6:33

Psalm 32:8, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; I will counsel you with My eye upon you.”

Hebrews 12:1-2; Luke 10:27

Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.”

III. Sanctified Living

John 8:12

“For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed” (John 3:20).

“Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9-10).

Hebrews 11:13, “these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, [they] confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.”

Matthew 10:37, “He who loves father or mother … son or daughter … more than Me is not worthy of Me.”

1 Peter 2:9

“We are ambassadors of Christ, as though God were entreating through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20).

1 Corinthians 9:22, “I have become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some.”

Galatians 5:22-23; 2 Corinthians 5:11

“… as He is, so also are we in this world” (1 John 4:17).

IV. Satisfying Substance

Acts 2:47

"In the world you will have tribulation" (John 16:33).

Hebrews 10:34, "[You] accepted joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding one."

Conclusion:

2 Corinthians 1:22; 2 Corinthians 5:8; 1 Peter 2:11; 1 Peter 1:13; 1 Timothy 6:12; 2 Corinthians 4:7)

“for we know that [when this] earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we [will] have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1).
